A Dance With A Princess

I just walked my daughter down the aisle a few days ago. The wedding was outside, the setting was beautiful, but not as beautiful as Celeste! As we walked up to the wooden pergola on the edge of a pond complete with a fountain, the band was playing and singing "You're Beautiful" by Phil Wickham.

The look on the groom's face was awe-inspiring: thankfulness, overcome, just the kind of look a Dad wants to see on the face of the one he is about to give his daughter's hand in marriage to.

The rain held off, the bridesmaid's baby girl decided not to be born yet (we will soon welcome my grandaughter into the world) the 10 groomsmen and 11 bridesmaids were kind, supportive, loving, prayerful, a little crazy, and enthusiastic; the guests were gracious and, I think, charmed and touched by the Presence of God through it all.

After the ceremony came the reception and a moment I was anticipating: the Bride's dance with her father- me.

I wrote a song for the occasion. I didn't plan to, but as we were looking for the appropriate song for the Daddy-Daughter dance, I was inspired. I kept it a secret from everyone except my wife and Celeste's sisters. Then the time came... I danced with the Beautiful Bride and my recorded voice sang what was (and is) in my heart for my little-girl-become-a-woman. I will never forget that moment.

The Story Behind The Music: "Restful Waters"

THE STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC: RESTFUL WATERS: INSTRUMENTAL OASIS VOL. I

Last year I received an email from a ministry in Birmingham, AL, called Identity Network. It was a mass email advertising their "Soaking" music. Within seconds of receiving the email, I emailed back that I would be glad to create some soaking music for their CD of the month series. (They had done one advertisement email for me for the "A Quiet Place" series so at least they were familiar with some of my music.) Within an hour (this was late in the evening) I got a reply saying that they were very interested in exploring the possibility of a mutual creative relationship. A few days later it was official and I began creating instrumental music.

With my new tools- a great new Yamaha Keyboard and a Macbook Pro, (and my trusty Fender Precision Bass I began to explore the creative opportunities of spontaneously composing fresh, Spirit-Filled instrumental music that was more than just piano. (My "FingerPaintings" and "A Quiet Place" series were basically just piano.) Identity Network has released several of these CDs. In our agreement, I can also release the music myself, as long as it has a different title.

Hence the new series: "Instrumental Oasis" (thank you Bethany for that title) and the first volume: "Restful Waters."

After I ministered recently in a home group meeting at my brother Philip's home in Little Rock AR, a lady said she saw colors- red, yellow and blue while I was playing prophetically, and that each color had a distinctive sound with it. A brother shared that those colors are primary colors and that he thought that the Holy Spirit was taking me and the music back to Genesis, to the beginning of God's purpose for music. Another man said that he believed that as I obeyed the Spirit of God and made sounds instrumentally and vocally (not necessarily just words) that God would move mightily to bring His love and healing and Word and Spirit to people, to nations. Pretty cool stuff! I had already titled these songs before that encounter. The titles:

Eden, The Living River, Tree Of Life, Restful Waters, Sons and Daughters of God, New Creation, On The Seventh Day...hmmm

The Sound of Heaven

Listen... Do you hear it? There's a sound rising in the earth. Getting louder... by the minute. It's the sound of freedom, it's the sound of grace- as a holy generation seeks His face!

"How blessed are those who know the joyful sound! Oh Lord, they walk in the light of Your countenance." Psalms 89:15 NAS

Adam and Eve heard the voice, the sound, of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day. David heard the sound as of a mighty army rustling through the tops of the mulberry trees as a sign that the Lord of Hosts was with him in battle, assuring victory.

The citizens of Jericho heard a sound, a shout from the children of Israel in obedience to the Lord that caused the strong city walls to fall down. The disciples heard a sound like a rushing mighty wind on the day of Pentecost.

What is "the sound?" It transcends the natural. I heard a sound from 4 brothers from Thailand who sang a song in a language I did not understand, with voices that, let's just say, were less than polished (and not in tune to my western ears!) Yet, all of us who heard that song, that sound, began to weep as we were overcome with the Love of God. I heard the sound of the Spirit underneath the door of my daughter Celeste's room as she worshipped. It wasn't just the worship music from her Ipod, it wasn't just her sweet voice; there was a supernatural sound of the Spirit of God.

Jesus is enthroned on the praises of His people. He makes His Presence known as we exalt with our yielded lives, and our song.

It is the sound of faith, passion, the sound of the Word of God.

Listen... do you hear it?

The Tree of Life

Ever since I read Rick Joyner's illuminating book "There Were Two Trees In The Garden," my journey in Christ has been different. I realized through that book and two others: "The Saving Life Of Christ" by Major Ian W. Thomas, and "The Normal Christian Life" by Watchman Nee; that, up until that time, even though I was genuinely a new creation in Christ (or born again) I was still basically living in my own strength- living for God instead of letting Him be my life.

Jesus Himself said something amazing and illuminating: "Of my own self I can do nothing, I only do what I see the Father doing. The Father in me does the works." Wait a minute, Jesus is God! What did He mean when He said He could do nothing of Himself?

The wonderful truth is that Jesus was not only 100% God ('In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word WAS God") He also became 100% human. God and man in one body. Let's look at a couple of passages from books in the Bible that are right next to each other:

James 1:13 says "...for God cannot be tempted by evil..." Hebrews 4:15, speaking of Jesus our High Priest: "For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin." (emphasis mine)

One verse says God cannot be tempted, the other that He was tempted. What do we do with this seeming contradiction? Here is the point: Jesus was tempted, but not as God. He was tempted as man!

So...what does that have to do with you and me? Everything. Jesus didn't do a single miracle out of His divinity, but out of his humanity dependent upon His (our) Heavenly Father. He empowers us to live in His strength, not our own. We learn to say with the Apostle Paul "I live, yet not I, but Christ Who lives in me." We are not earthbound anymore, but a new creation!

The two trees in the garden? One is the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. It's chief characteristic? Self-sufficiency. The Other is the Tree of Life, Jesus Christ Himself. By the grace of God we can choose to eat from the Tree of Life daily. Christ in you is the hope of glory!

New Adventures In Musical Creativity!

New Creative Endeavors!

Last December, just around Christmas time, I received an email from a ministry based in Birmingham Al called Identity Network. The email mentioned some soaking music that they were releasing. I contacted them and told them I would be interested in creating some soaking music in conjunction with their ministry. After just a few days we had agreed to work together to release a soaking CD every month for the year 2011!

and those projects have been well received- two of them have been released at Hobby Lobby stores, as well as two projects from the "A Quiet Place" series. http://www.nimbitmusic.com/davidbaroni.1

The Soaking series is different. For one thing, I am using many more sounds than just piano. The songs are audio journeys, paintings for the ears and heart. Each project is about 50+ minutes. Many of the songs feature exotic percussion and "live" bass. Of course, I include lots of nice piano too. Like when Eric Liddell of "Chariots of Fire" runs, I sense the pleasure of God when I compose and record new music.

I will still be writing and recording vocal music as well, however I wanted to let my friends know what I am up to with this new "Soaking" (as in: soaking in the presence of God) music. Beautiful Blood

I heard a story recently of a man who was planning to disrupt a Christian outdoor tent meeting. There was a ring of cars parked around the tent and as he jumped on the hood of one car, about to start yelling and being a disruption, he heard singing.

     "What can wash away my sin?"

   He thought: "Nothing! There is nothing that can cleanse me from my sin." Then he heard the song continue:

     "Nothing but the blood of Jesus."

   Suddenly and supernaturally he became aware of the love of God for him and the power of the Blood of Jesus to forgive him, make him clean spiritually and set Him free. That man is a leader in the Body of Christ today!

Good Friday, the day that Jesus Christ was nailed to a cross, looked like the worst day in human history. That scene of unspeakable tragedy became a love song to the world as God demonstrated how far He was willing to go to restore mankind to a relationship with his Creator. The words to this song "Beautiful Blood" perhaps best convey my thoughts today.

Overflow!

Recently I was listening to a message on CD and the speaker exhorted the listener to spend time with God regularly and resist the temptation to minister "on empty." I realized that I had put "all these things" first instead of "seeking first the Kingdom of God..." (Matthew 6:33)

So I stopped the CD, told the Lord that I was sorry for neglecting my time with Him and went to the piano to sing to the Lord and worship.

I sensed His strong Presence and refreshing and I kept hearing and singing the word "overflow...overflow." There was such a flow of the Holy Spirit, a supernatural confidence enveloped me. I felt like King David must have when he said "By my God I can run through a troop and leap over a wall!"

The answer is so easy... He is my portion, my delight, my strength, my source. I don't seek Him for all those things- when I enjoy the Lord those things, like ministry opportunities, just come naturally- or should I say supernaturally!

So thank You for your patience Lord when I take matters into my own hands, remind me quickly to delight in You! Thank you for the amazing River of Life, the Holy Spirit. I want to drink deeply from the River, swim in the River, play in the River and let the River of God overflow me and refresh others In Jesus Name!

Sons, Not Orphans!

For you have not received the spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out "Abba! Father!" (Romans 8:15 NAS)

When an orphan is rescued from an abusive, fearful situation by a loving family it takes patience and consistent love from the new parents (and siblings) for the former orphan to feel safe, to feel loved and accepted.

The new son or daughter in the family has all the rights and privileges associated with "sonship" yet still reacts out of the old orphan patterns rooted in fear of rejection, abandonment and lack. The child may wolf down food placed in front of her, have difficulty sleeping or act out in many ways- forgetting that she is no longer an orphan, she is loved, accepted and safe.

We are the same way in our relationship with God. It takes time and practice to re-train our brains and hearts to walk in a trusting relationship with our Loving Father. Sometimes we beg and plead for things that He has already given us. How do we change that ingrained old habit? Thanksgiving is one way.

Last year I needed a new keyboard and computer. I started reminding my Heavenly Father, "God, I need a Macbook Pro and a Yamaha s90 Keyboard." I was pleading with God from an orphan posture- proclaiming to the atmosphere in a way that magnified and manifested my need. Then, the light-bulb went on. I remembered that God already knew my need, that I was a son!

I changed my prayer into praise. With no circumstantial evidence but with faith as the substance of things hoped for I started saying: "Father, I thank you for my new Macbook Pro and my Yamaha s90 Keyboard!" You guessed it... within a few weeks Father supernaturally manifested what I, in faith, thanked Him for. I write this blog on my new laptop!

That is just one example of how we grow in practical ways as sons and daughters of the Most High God. There are all kinds of other ways- our thoughts change, our words and actions change. We don't live in fear of abandonment we walk in peace. God is patient with us as well (sometimes the hardest person to give grace to is ourselves.)

If you are in Christ you are not in bondage to fear, you are not an orphan, you are a son- accepted in the Beloved!

Story Behind The Song: "I Rest In You"

I Rest In You (Not Afraid)

Here is another example of a song that has just three parts; a verse, a chorus and a bridge. It is a special song inspired in Lagos, Nigeria called “I Rest In You (Not Afraid.)

I had been in Africa for almost two weeks. I had sung and taught and spoken in Abuja, in Kaduna in northern Nigeria, and for the last week of the trip in the sprawling Lagos area. The ministry had gone exceptionally well but two weeks is a long time to be away from my wife and family and by the last day of ministry I was ready to be back home in good-ole Franklin, Tennessee.

So wearily I rode in the car driven by my friend (and sometimes co-writer) Kunle Fadahunsi across town to the Rose of Sharon Church pastured by Olatunde Odusote. We call him Rev. Doc.

It was only 7:30 in the morning, painfully early for this musician. I was tired and homesick and frankly wanted to get the day over with and get home to Rita. But God gives grace…

As Kunle and I walked into the church, Reverend Doc, a wonderful, wiry, strong and gentle man of God, was leading some of the church volunteers in worship before the service started (I was going to minister in two morning services back-to-back.) The people were singing with such passion, and there was such an overwhelming, obvious, tangible sense of the Presence of the Lord in that place that I was instantaneously refreshed; not just emotionally but physically!

What had happened? Well, the Psalms say that God is enthroned in, inhabits, lives in, makes Himself known in the praises of His people (Psalms 22:3) The word also says that there are times of refreshing that come from the Presence of the Lord and that …”in His Presence is fullness of joy, at His right Hand are pleasures forevermore!”

Led by Rev. Doc, the believers in Jesus were singing praises that He made Himself at home in. As we experienced His Manifest Presence, we were refreshed and experienced fullness of joy!

All this, and the church service hadn’t even started yet. The first service went well. We took a short break and a different group of folks from the congregation gathered for the second service. At the end of the meeting Pastor Odusote (Doc) got up to encourage the people and, I thought, dismiss the service.

But God wasn’t through.

Reverend Doc started singing spontaneously a new song inspired by the Holy Spirit. God is the best songwriter by far who ever was or will be; and He is the reason for any impact my songs have had on people!

Doc sang a simple melody and this simple phrase:

“I rest in You, O Lord, I trust in You O God,

I’m not afraid anymore, I’m not afraid anymore.”

He sang it, acapella. He sang it again. People joined in. “I rest in You O Lord…” The music team joined in, playing a simple “Heart and Soul” chord progression. We “owned” the song; the words were not only coming from Rev. Doc, we all sang them and meant them and those words became a powerful declaration of faith: “I’m not afraid anymore.” As I wrote in the first chapter of this book “The Power of Song” this spontaneously inspired song was a prophetic proclamation in the middle of Lagos, and people were set free from fear by the grace of God and the Power of the Name of Jesus through the words of faith we were singing!

The next day, the day before I returned to America, Kunle and I were remembering the wonderful time we had on the day before and we started talking about Doc’s song. Before we knew it we were inspired to write a verse. We called Doc to ask if we could put our verse with his chorus and he graciously and excitedly said yes. Great things happen in the Kingdom of God when we don’t worry about who gets the credit and we give God the honor and the glory! (I know some songwriters who actually count the words that they contribute to a song in order to split songwriter percentages, and I suppose in some cases that could be valid for some personality types, but as we say in Mississippi: “Oh for cryin’ out loud!”)

So, in this case, the chorus came first- but if you notice the following verse follows the speech-giving formula of using the verse as an introduction, a “reason why” that builds into the chorus. Then, a bit later, Kunle and I added the bridge which reinforces scripturally and emotionally the reason why we can rest and not be afraid. As we sing the bridge we are literally and spiritually singing the Word of God to our own souls!

The Gospel That Jesus Preached

"The Gospel That Jesus Preached"

When Jesus had heard that John was in prison, he began His ministry by declaring this in Mark 1:15: "The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel."

Historians tell us that there was 400 years of virtual silence from the heavens between the end of the Old Testament and the beginning of the new. 400 long years of the people of God hearing nothing through the prophets. That is a long time.

Then the silence was broken forever when The Father sent His very Voice, Jesus Christ, The Word!

Words are powerful. When exchanged, words express communication. Communication is important to God and to his crowning creation, mankind, because communication is the outflow of relationship. It is significant that one of the Names of the Son of God, Jesus Christ, is THE WORD!

Let's look at the statement Jesus made introducing his ministry. "The time is fulfilled (the long wait for the Messiah was over) and the kingdom of God is at hand; (as my friend Dudley Hall says "I've come on the scene and I've brought my Kingdom with me") repent (change your direction and your whole way of thinking; your mindset) and believe the gospel. (the good news!)

In Matthew 6:33 we are told by Jesus to "...seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things (what we eat, wear, etc.) will be added to us."

If Jesus told us to seek first the kingdom of God and it was the message that He preached, it's obviously important.

The Gospel of Salvation

Is the gospel of salvation the same thing as the gospel of the kingdom? No! The gospel of salvation, that Jesus became man, lived in perfect obedience to His Father, died on the cross for our sins, rose from the dead on the third day, and ascended to the Father is vital. It is the entrance point to the gospel of the kingdom, but is not the entire gospel. God's intention is that the whole earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of God (that is, Who God really is- "glory" means the "true essence.")

We have majored on the gospel of salvation and thus relegated the church to a future age and escaped involvement in the nitty gritty here and now of where people live.

Jesus said to "occupy 'til I come." Not just hang on, grit our teeth, do the best we can and wait for heaven. Indeed, God's goal is not so much to get us to heaven but to get heaven into us! To conform us to the image of Christ.

The gospel of the Kingdom permeates every part of society, it's not just for "spiritual" or "religious" folks. It's the message of God's love, His benevolent rule, His righteous reign in everyday life. We, the people of God, are to make a loving difference in every sphere- social, political, economic, education, arts and entertainment, family. Real people full of real Life by His grace.
